Portrait of Adelaide M. Cromwell, the first African American faculty member to be hired at Smith College. Hill was a member of the Sociology Department in the mid-1940s. She also was a member of the Smith College Class of 1940. Cromwell was the niece of Otelia Cromwell, Class of 1900, the first African American student to graduate from Smith College.
