Color in the Library
The new additions provided much needed physical space for both books and students. It also provided color: the walls, pillars, doors, upholstery, and floors of all the interior spaces were updated in a variety of blues, greens, and gold tones. These color photographs show one of the surf blue walls and the golden yellow chairs and ceiling beams in the College Archives.
Not everyone was pleased with the new library additions. President Thomas C. Mendenhall wrote this response to an alumna who was outraged by the modern design and the cost of the building project.
The new library additions were celebrated in the fall issue of Smith Alumnae Quarterly.
